Chapter 1

The promise of burning lights.

The galaxy was unmoving in an infinite balance as light from its countless stars radiated through the boundless darkness. Starships came and went, venturing across established space lanes or daring to explore beyond known borders. One particular ship was perfectly still, as if unwilling to disturb the fragile harmony. Although the same could not be said of its passengers.
Aleita Reidstar stood in the corner of the bridge, her arms crossed comfortably in front of her. She stared outside at the gleaming orange lights radiating from the planet below. Her grey-green eyes lit up like wild flames in sharp contrast to the grey walls and slick machinery surrounding her. Dozens of young women and men in dark uniforms manned the deck, silently studying their assigned displays.
Aleita was running through the details of the operation in her mind when the heavy circular bridge doors slid open. The ship’s commander, a well-groomed and imposing man, marched in and made his way towards her.
“It must be of great importance indeed if you’re running this operation yourself,” said Commander Haris Peik, a slight hint of disdain on his voice.
Aleita turned towards him in acknowledgement, not giving any importance to his sense of threatened authority.
“Each one of us must do our part to ensure the continued success of the Federation, Commander Peik,” she responded with her usual graceful force.
“That we must,” the commander agreed, looking away. “I trust everything is in order?” He added with exaggerated emphasis.
Aleita simply nodded and Commander Peik made his way out. This was the third time this particular cruiser had been recommissioned for Federation Intelligence affairs these past months. She could sympathise with the commander for the disruptions although she didn’t much care for foolish pride feuds. As Federation Intelligence Director, Aleita had far more important matters that required her attention.
One of the officers walked towards her nervously and announced that they would be making their descent in just under an hour. He handed her the drink she had asked for and hurried back to his station. She sipped slowly, appreciating every blueberry that had been carefully crushed to produce the thick, refreshing beverage she was presently enjoying. There was nothing quite like the promise of those burning orange lights.
